1.) Job Title: Research Associate (Agronomy)

Location: Jos, Plateau

Description

  • The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture on behalf of CIP seeks suitable Nigerian for the position below at the CIP project location in Jos.
  • NPSSP aims to support potato seed security in Nigeria by building local capacity within the public and private sector to supply adequate amounts of quality seed of in-demand and locally adapted varieties that meet the main market segment, while supporting smallholder farmers in maximizing their investments in seed through building capacity in on-farm seed quality management, good agricultural practices for improving soil health and fertility.

Duties

  • Design, plan and manage multi-location on-farm experimental trials.
  • Provide technical backstopping to farmers, extension workers and researchers on implementing on multi-location on-farm trials.
  • Build capacity of partners, extension agents and/or enumerators in the use of digital data collection tools to collect data in multi-location field trials.
  • Monitor progress with digital data collection by different enumerators and follow up on overall progress with data submission.
  • Conduct capacity building interventions for ware potato producers, farmers, partners, private sector enterprises on soil fertility management and other good agricultural practices.
  • Coordinate and support planning and implementation of field days and training events.
  • Work with partners to coordinate and monitor activities, such as extension training of trainers followed by farmer training, and monitor collection of field data.
  • Oversee day-to-day management and implementation of the project activities in close collaboration with project partners.
  • Present the activities, results, impacts and outcomes of the project at professional, donor and other stakeholders’ meetings.
  • Produce progress reports of the field activities including maintaining database, managing and analyzing technical and economic data, write briefs, journal article and project technical reports.
  • Document lessons learned and best practices on the project development, implementation, and oversight activities.
  • Work effectively in the project team to develop a collegial, mutually supportive, and high-performance work atmosphere.
  • Proactively take responsibility to ensure safety of humans and property and implement the project activities in timely manner in keeping with the budgets allocated.
  • Carry out any job-related duties as may be assigned by the Country Team Leader or other senior members of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Agriculture or related discipline with minimum of five (5) years’ hands on training and field experience in agronomy and soil fertility management of vegetative propagated crops.

3.) Job Title: Project Team Lead

Duties

  • Develop understanding of ecosystem of market actors in the target value chains.
  • Deepen project strategy where needed to deliver on climate resilience, nutrition and inclusion related objectives.
  • Support strategic partnership identification and development.
  • Detail activities to scale up interventions and enable the team and external stakeholders to deliver a robust work plan to achieve key project targets and results.
  • Track activities with lead firms, aggregators, strategic partners and public sector collaborators.
  • Provide technical inputs to state teams and business development managers to deliver on robust seed and grain systems related deliverables for the program.
  • Drive the sustainable intensification approach to enable resilience and optimal natural resource use by farmers.
  • Ensure delivery and embedding of high quality technical assistance to delivery partners.
  • Guide the development of sustainable business models for private sector led scaling of key project activities.
  • Build strong collaboration framework with state and federal ministries of agriculture and environment.
  • Ensure integration of vulnerable segments such as women and IDPs in relevant aspects of programming.
  • Manage and build the capacity of the BDM agronomy and financing.
  • Support the business development manager financing to ensure adequate working capital and risk management needs of farmers and MSMEs are well met.
  • Support the development of a collaborative and efficient team strongly led by HarvestPlus core values of honesty, reliability, sincerity, fairness and ethical behavior.
  • Increase private sector investment into the vitamin A maize, iron pearl millet and cowpea subsectors through building competitive commodity value chains that increase Return on Investment (ROI);
  • Support the Scaling Climate Adapted Nutritious Crops Through Market Systems (Nigeria) program in the establishment of strong agro input supply chains by provision of business development support to all actors, namely: seed companies and agro-dealers.
  • Facilitate the creation of robust supply chains for aggregators and processors through the provision of technical assistance and capacity building to producers, aggregators, retailers, service providers, and other actors.
  • Work with the state coordinators to put in place sustainable contract farming and out grower business models that will guarantee continuous raw material sourcing for processors.
  • Suggest and implement demand creation strategies that will increase demand for vitamin A maize, millet and cowpea seed and grains
  • Work with the state coordinators to reduce post-harvest losses via the identification and deployment of proven, culturally appropriate post-harvest loss, processing and food safety solutions;
  • Create business opportunities along value chains for young people and women through capacity building, and the creation of support systems via mentoring, access to finance and markets
  • Provide specialist, pragmatic, and effective advice to agribusiness clients based on successful value chain development strategies and models that are contextually appropriate to the region.
  • Establish effective partnerships with stakeholders, including other development partners, using a range of communication and facilitation skills, to deliver improved efficiency along commodity value chains to clients.
  • Engage in knowledge generation (case studies), value chain analysis, policy reviews, and other analytical support service relevant to building competitive commodity value chains and an enabling environment.
  • Develop strategic business plans with investment metrics and measures.
  • Establish business development needs for businesses, with identified priority areas of involvement that informs development of plans.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Agribusiness Management, Economics, Business Administration or any other related field with a minimum of fifteen (15) years’ experience using market led approaches with at least four of those in a leadership position performing similar or related role in a well-structured organization.

  • Have sound mind, high integrity, good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Have ability to adhere to instruction, calm and ready to work, non-egocentric attitude and effective time management skill.
  • Have ability to manage pressure, prior knowledge of material handling tool and knowledge of material handling tools and basic supply chain duties.
  • Have experience in working in diplomatic environment.
  • Have ability to communicate fluently in Hausa language will be a strong advantage
  • Have experience in implementing market system activities in northern Nigeria.
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English. Working knowledge of Hausa will be strong advantage.
  • Have excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to communicate the project approach and progress to stakeholders at the senior-most levels in Government, development institutions and private sector.

4.) Job Title: Field Worker III

Duties

  • Assist in implementation of all post-harvest operations under supervision of the post-harvest supervisors and line breeder.
  • Assist in receiving, sorting and recording samples received from field trials.
  • Assist in data collection on cassava roots.
  • Assist in processing cassava roots into designated food products (mainly gari, starch and odorless fufu).
  • Assist in determination of dry matter and starch content.

5.) Job Title: Database Officer

Duties

  • Receive data from the field on a regular basis to measure achievement against the performance indicators.
  • Check data quality from different and implement the Activity M&E techniques and data management protocols.
  • Store and maintain records of all data processing activities conducted in the Activity.
  • Assure safekeeping of Activity data in line with organizational data storage policy.
  • Assist in the development and/or finalization of the Activity Work Plan and keep it updated in accordance with Activity interventions and timeframes.
  • Support the implementation and coordination of M&E activities according to M&E plan.
  • Prepare data for technical reports including quarterly and annual reports on activities relating to Activity implementation.

Duties

  • Provide technical support in designing crop and livestock chain value development.
  • Provide capacity-building support in the area of agribusiness plan development and establishment of agribusiness enterprises.
  • Participate in the establishment, supervision, and management of all research and demonstration fields.
  • Participate in the establishment, supervision, and management of field operations, cross-cutting various unit projects.
  • Provide capacity-building support during training on crop production.
