9 SYMPTOMS OF ALCOHOL POISONING
Many of us don’t associate drinking alcohol with the word “poison,” but the sad fact of the matter is that alcohol is exactly that. Like so many other poisons, the body can deal with a small amount, but the situation can become quite serious – even deadly – when levels are increased. It may seem funny to some people to see the effects of heavy drinking but there is real danger involved when drinking gets out of control.
It’s vitally important to recognize the following 9 signs of alcohol poisoning.
It is expected that some changes in a person’s ability to think and reason will take place when they are drinking but when someone becomes very noticeably confused, that may be a sign of serious trouble.
2. COORDINATION PROBLEMS
A great many people aren’t likely to be as steady on their feet as they normally are after a few drinks but when someone might be described as “falling down drunk,” that’s cause for concern. The amount of alcohol required to result in a significant loss of coordination might also be enough to put their life at risk.
You don’t have to be an M.D. to know that vomiting is often the body’s way of trying to get rid of something that’s harmful or dangerous. Alcohol is no exception and although the amount of alcohol required to cause vomiting will vary from person to person, it’s a no-brainer to figure out that the person who throws up after a sip or two is probably not suffering from alcohol poisoning. Vomiting is a common reaction for some people who drink just a little, so watch for other symptoms that make alcohol poisoning more likely.
Here’s a symptom of alcohol poisoning that will be very hard to miss and is a sure sign that someone is in serious trouble from drinking too much. This is definitely a call 9-1-1 situation!
5. SLOW OR IRREGULAR BREATHING
Alcohol poisoning can cause problems with respiration which includes irregular breathing or breathing that is abnormally slow. When someone’s breathing slows to 8 breaths per minute or slower, it’s a sign that something serious is wrong.
6. PALE OR BLUISH COLORED SKIN
Alcohol can wreak all kinds of havoc on the body and that includes making a person appear very pale or even have their skin color appear a bit blue. That’s a sign that blood circulation is being disrupted and that’s a condition that can turn very serious in a short amount of time.
7. LOW BODY TEMPERATURE
While we normally associate fever with sickness it’s important to realize that low body temperature or hypothermia can also be a sign of serious health issues. This is yet another effect that alcohol poisoning can have on the body.
You’ve probably also heard this symptom described as a “drunken stupor” and it basically means that a person is conscious but unresponsive.
It’s not uncommon to hear stories of people who drank so much that they “passed out.” While this may not sound too serious on the surface, the fact that someone drank enough alcohol to cause them to lose consciousness is not something that should be taken lightly.
